About Emilie Franceschin

Current project:
Joindre, jaillir et jubiler, residence 17th to 24th july with the artist Nicolas Puyjalon, on Center of contemporary art Chapelle Saint-Jacques, in Saint-Gaudens.
We decided with this other performance artist to work together on this specific space of the Chapel by addressing the theme of classical sculpture. We will approach this idea of construction and destruction through the work of our bodies and materials like clay, plaster, wood, etc…

Emilie Franceschin ( b. 1983 ) is an artist working in the field of performance.
Performances are always unique and created for the spaces in which she works.
She has also constructed a whole series of work comprising drawing that records traces and objects of her performances which remain as visible documents after the duration of the performance.

The artist’s performance practice questions the place of female’s body in society.
She constructs her work through actions based on oppositions, contrasts and imbalances.
Her performances often embody gestures that aim to overturn, degrade, lower by ridicule, dirty or trample what may be considered to attractive or admired.
Her drawings and installations also aim to create a shift in perspective or a blurring between up and down, the glorious and the infamous, attraction and repulsion, constraint and desire.

Faced with this condition of the ephemeral in her work, she implements adopts rules for archiving her performances. This documentation exist in both textual and photographic form, in an attempt to answer this question of the performance’s trace : What remains afterwards?

This process of archiving resulted in a monographic edition in 2014 titled Du coeur à l’ouvrage, designed in collaboration with french graphic designers Rovo . She is also currently working with the design of another artist book Tu ne te souviendras pas, about a project around frozen performance wear.

Emilie Franceschin’s work has been presented in museums and art centers across France ; Museum Les Abattoirs – Frac Occitanie in Toulouse, Musée Calbet in Grisolles, Abbaye de Beaulieu Centre des Monuments Nationaux in Ginals, Lieu-commun artist run space, Toulouse.
